Entry requirements:

Apart from the Pre-requisite, the candidates must be either a diploma or undergraduate degree holder or pursuing such a degree while applying.

Application procedure:

Students need to make a formal application via KIER website no later than a week before commencement of classes. After their application & qualifications are assessed, they will be invited to pay the fee and confirm their seat.

Course description:

This 2 weeks course is designed to provide a wide and In-depth understanding about the advanced concepts of Directional drilling, Drill string, casing & tubing Design and stress analysis. A deeper technical knowledge is provided on Drill bit and cementing.

Course content:

  • Directional drilling: reasons for deviated wells, Depth & geographical reference systems, Planning the profile of the well, Trajectory calculations, Parameters defining the well path, Scaled diagrams, Considerations when Planning the Directional Well Path, Calculating the Survey of a Well, deviation tools & techniques, Directional wellbore survey, calculating wellbore trajectory
  • Drill String Design & stress analysis: Functions, dimensions and various components of drill string, Drill string Design for stability of the string, Bending Moment considerations in String Design, Design considerations for the Length of Drill collars, Drillstring Stress Design Calculations, Drill string design procedure with example
  • Cementing Operations: Cementing process – In depth, Surveys & logs to evaluate cement jobs, Cementing calculations with example
  • Drill Bit technology: Drag bits, roller cone bits and diamond bits along with its sub-types, Choosing appropriate bit for a formation, Roller cone bit design – in depth, Cutting structure, Naming & grading of drill bits, Drill bit selection & evaluation based on tooth wearing, cutter material and bit body material, calculating Bit Performance.
  • Casing & Tubing Design: Casing types- recap, Casing collapse design criteria, Tubing design factors, casing design factors, Casing installations, service life loads, tensile loads during drilling & production, Casing design with expandables, Kick Tolerance in Casing Shoe Selection, Graphical method of casing design, casing design example, collapse & burst design during drilling & production.

Course Objective:

The main Objectives of the course are:

  1. To provide an In-depth understanding about the advanced concepts of Directional drilling, Drill string, casing & tubing Design and stress analysis
  2. To provide a deeper technical knowledge on Drill bit and cementing.
  3. To impart knowledge about performing various calculations and making informed decisions based on the results
  4. To explain about making optimised decisions for the given scenario about drill bits, cementing schedule & directional drilling plan

Student Handouts:

More than 200 pages of handout notes will be provided to the participants during the class. The e-version of these handouts will also be available on the INFONIX for the participant to access, for up to 90 days from the start of the course.

Tutor Information:

Mr. Vipin Bhalla, Drilling Manager (Rtd), has over 30 years of hands-on experience in Drilling & completion. He has held various positions at all levels in his extensive career from Driller to Drilling Manager. He has worked on Rigs across India and also has more than 5 years experience as Drilling Supervisor in Kuwait, Abu Dhabi & Oman. During his experience which spreads across 4 decades, he has vast experience in tackling well kicks, total Mud loss scenarios, drilling high pressure gas wells, drilling wells with horizontal drain holes, executing well killing operations, drilling wells up to 4,800mts deep, drilling highly deviated, horizontal and extended reach wells, drilling HPHT wells, drilled wells with high degree of cavings and differential sticking problems, Performed Fishing operations, to name a few of the feathers in his cap. He has vast practical knowledge in drilling, completion, well intervention, drilling re-entry wells, MWD systems and HSEQ management at rigs. He has also got a few years of experience in co-coordinating Rig construction & Rig refurbishment operations.

Method of delivery:

The instruction is conducted in a classroom provided with spacious & friendly environment for the students. Each individual will have separate seating arrangement, with enough space providing comfort. Projector & board will be used to show slides and to explain concepts. Beside this, reading room & desktops with internet facility is available for every individual student to further enrich their knowledge outside class hours. KIER has developed an online self assessment portal called INFONIX were every participant can log into their account (username & password will be provided by the institute) were they can take self assessment for the course they have enrolled for and also can read the electronic version of each module. The user account will stay active for 3 months from the date of joining.

The course content includes, more than pages of class handouts, presentation slides used while taking the class and other relevant reference material. The user account will stay active for 90 days from the first day of the class.

Examination and pass percentage:

Examination will be conducted at the last day of the course. The examination will be in the form of multiple choice questions. Totally 50 questions needs to be answered and the student needs to score more than 60% to pass the examination.

Course completion certificate:

Candidates who have scored more than 60% in the exam conducted at the end of the course, will be presented with a course completion certificate. This certificate can be either sent via courier or can be collected at the office.
